The price per square metre is the benchmark everyone looks for, but it varies a lot with size: a small window costs more per m² than a large one, because the frame, hardware and installation do not shrink with the glass. At comparable size, several factors move the price. Size first: the larger the unit, the more profile, glass and reinforcement it needs. Then the material: PVC remains the most economical, while aluminium allows very large glazed areas, as on a sliding or patio door.
The opening type matters too — a fixed window costs noticeably less than a tilt-and-turn sash — as does the glazing: laminated safety double glazing adds to the price of standard double glazing. Finally VAT: 6% for the renovation of a home over ten years old in Belgium, 21% for a new build — a significant difference on the final bill.
